Because Sailhant is 3,000 feet above sea level, it is cool in the evenings (there is snow in the mountains until early June) -- a sweater or a jacket is suggested. It can be in the 80s (swimming weather) during the day. Dress in the evenings is informal except Saturday night.

There is marvelous hiking in the volcanic mountains and one can swim in the cascade lake below Sailhant, so swimsuits and hiking gear are in order. There are also horses for riding.

There are many magnificent châteaux, churches, and stone villages to see. The Michelin Guide & Maps
(Auvergne-Rhone Valley Green Guide and Map 239) are best. We will be exploring the region and have lunch out on Saturday.

Visit to Saint-Flour – 9:30am

Musée de la Haute-Auvergne, in the square in the center of the town. Originally the 15th-century Bishop's Palace – information about prehistoric Cantal, marvelous 12th-century statuary, regional furniture, and cheese-making.

Cathédrale de Saint-Pierre, also in the square, 15th-century late Gothic – unusual style for the region. Wall paintings and a black Christ. (Many interesting theories concerning the black Virgin and the black Christ, including a connection to Egyptian sculptures).

Musée A-Douët, also in the square. Richly decorated house with some objects from Sailhant.

Visit to Château d'Alleuze
